Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not only the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
